Task:

Indonesia consumes more than 6 million tons of plastic every year. As there is no national waste management system, people only have a few options for its disposal. Therefore, it is estimated that one sixth of the plastics end up in the ocean.

Project STOP was founded to change this by mainly focusing on three things: Education, setting-up a waste management infrastructure and collecting waste. They educate and employ people to go from door to door to register residents, collect fees and pick up waste. To optimize and digitize this process, we were asked to help.
Idea:
Creating an intuitive android app that connects the people who want their trash to be picked up with the collectors. Especially optimized for old devices with small screen sizes and an environment with poor internet, targeting employees of the local waste management system.

To deliver a robust and user-centric product, we conducted stakeholder interviews and created a vision and user story mapping to define target groups and a prioritized set of features. Information architecture and visual language formed the starting point and QA and user testing rounded up our activities.

Core features of our app are the digitized customer registration and fee collection – which improves transparency and efficiency and addresses one major challenge: the future financing of the system.
Result:
The app has been rolled out in Banyuwangi, Java in August 2023 – hence the name “Banyuwangi Hijau” – and will soon be scaled up to 350.000 people in cooperation with the respective local governments.

Key Feature:

Registering residents for the program.

Due to a lack of local waste management options, Indonesians are compelled to manage (plastic) waste independently. The app's key feature is resident registration, achieved through a brief questionnaire.

Key Feature:

Collecting & documenting fees from residents.

Officers can gather and monitor monthly fees and installments paid by residents effortlessly, accomplished through a straight-forward two-touch event process.

Additional Feature:

Tracking personal achievements.

To further improve the system and intrinsically motivate officers, this section displays an overview of registered households, collected fees and dates of installments.
